How to Safely Use TENS Therapy

1. Attach the electrodes to clean, dry skin.

2. Select intensity levels starting from low and increasing gradually.

3. Avoid placement over the spine, chest, or broken skin.

4. Session Duration & Intensity

● Start at a low intensity and gradually increase to a comfortable level.

● Use for 15-30 minutes per session, up to two to three times daily.

● If muscles twitch excessively, lower the intensity.

● Do not exceed manufacturer-recommended duration to avoid overstimulation

5. Electrode Placement Guidelines

● Pain Location: Place the electrodes around the area of pain, not directly on the pain center.

● Muscle Stimulation vs. Nerve Stimulation:

○ For muscle relaxation, Place the electrodes on or near the affected muscle.

○ For nerve pain relief, Position electrodes along the nerve pathway rather than directly over a joint.

● Same Side vs. Both Sides:

○ You can use electrodes on both sides of the body for balance, but they must be positioned symmetrically.

○ For unilateral pain (one side only): Both electrodes should be on the same side of the body.

○ For bilateral pain (both sides): Place one electrode on each side of the body, ensuring mirrored placement.

● Crossing Electrodes:

○ Some protocols allow X-pattern placement, especially for nerve pain radiating down a limb.

○ If using four electrodes, arrange them in a box or X-shape around the pain area.

General Electrode Placement Examples

Lower Back Pain:

● Place electrodes above and below the pain area or one on each side of the spine. ✅ Knee Pain:

● Position above and below the kneecap, or both sides of the knee. ✅ Neck & Shoulder Pain:

● Place one electrode on the upper shoulder and another near the base of the neck. ✅ Sciatica & Leg Pain:

● Place electrodes along the path of the sciatic nerve, from the lower back down the leg. ✅ Wrist & Hand Pain:

● Position near the forearm or wrist, avoiding direct placement over bony areas.

Safety Precautions

❌ DO NOT place electrodes:

● On the head, throat, or near the eyes.

● Over the heart or directly on the spine.

● On broken skin, open wounds, or areas with numbness.

● Over areas with metal implants (consult a doctor first).

● On both sides of the chest simultaneously (to avoid interfering with heart rhythms).

● Cleaning: Wipe with a soft, damp cloth (do not submerge in water).

● Storage: Allow the mat to cool before rolling or folding.
