CBD for pets

Updated: May 9, 2021

Here is some helpful information on dosing Pet drops, if you are new to CBD for your pet. For a 500mg, 30 ml bottle, the baseline starting dosage is 0.1ml to 0.2ml (which is 1.66 to 3.32 mg) per 10 pounds of body weight given up to twice daily (1 dropperful is equivalent to 1 ml). If no response after the first week, the dose may be slowly titrated up, to up to 5 times the starting dose (but please consult with your veterinarian). Starting dose may be same for dogs or cats. Cats may actual require up to twice the amount as a dog (it is metabolized differently).

The grain free pet chews are 5mg per chew and a favorite among my dogs but occasionally I will put the drops on their favorite treat or food. I had one foster dog that required a much higher dose even initially for anxiety, but every pet is different. There have been studies done at Colorado State University reflecting the safety at the higher dosing (Assessment of Safety, Toxicity, and Pharmacokinetics of Cannabidiol in Healthy Dogs). This study was done prior to their study regarding CBD and dogs with seizures. Dosing for seizures can be higher yet and may be 5mg/kg BID (or higher), which would be 22mg per 10 pounds of body weight. Additional studies are needed though (however, I know some incredible success stories). Always consult with a veterinarian that is familiar with CBD dosing, especially if your pet has seizures or on medications or trying to wean off of medications.

Always use less than 0.3% THC or zero in pets for safety.

Love all the fur babies!!

Duchess was having a little transient stomach issue, so added a little CBD and probiotics. The result? Well, they say a picture is worth a thousand words! :)
